Boden Maxi Dress-Hmmmm....need your help

I was pleasantly suprised to see my boden package in the mail this morning already. I know we have all been anxious to see the Maxi Jersey Dress in real life. This dress is much brighter then the pictures reflect although it is a great color combo and the dress itself is very well made and the jersey fabric is thick enough to not be see through in the light (at least I don't think it will).Well, here it is layered with a white tee and ummmm, I am not sure. First mistake, I ordered this in a regular length instead of long. I did this because Maxi Dresses are usually so long already and I didn't want to trip over it. Obviously, I did not have to worry about that. I also sized down on this one  (UK 10, US 6) so it is a little bit tight around my chest but since I am FAR from busty, that is not that big of a deal.

So what do you think? I am not sure it all that flattering on me. Am being to hard on myself and it is it great as is, should I exchange it for a longer size, or should I return it altogether since there is no shortage of Boden items on my wishlist? Keep in mind this is a $98 dress.

p.s. I have no idea why my feet look mangled here, really I have very normal feet

You dress so cute and know what looks good on your body type - IMO this dress doesnt flatter, and is a bit short for a Maxi. BTW, thanks for such a great blog, I stumbled on to it a few weeks ago and love your style.

I don't think it's worth $98!! It kind of looks like a dress that you could get at Target. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you could ever look *bad* but IMO, this just isn't that flattering on you! HTH!?!

This is cute, but I think it would be cuter as a short dress instead of a long one. I think that if you want to go for a great maxi dress to find one that has thinner straps (but not necessarily spaghetti straps) and longer length. This one doesn't really flatter you, which I find amazing since you're gorgeous! Maybe also a maxi with more empire waist detailing will give it a better flow.

Same. Sorry! I do not think it is worth $98. Although, I do love the color combo. Last summer I found a cute maxi dress that I loved, from Lucky Brand. Got it for $49 and wore it all summer...............:)

I think this is a great thing to wear by the pool or on the beach, but for daily wear, no, I'd return it and get your $98 back.

Yeah, I agree with others in that it's not worth $98. Also, I'm not so sure how I like it with the white tee underneath. Maybe try a different look to see some options? Either way, I'd either wait for it to go on sale or find a cheaper alternative.

erm. I apologize- but there are more flattering dresses for you out there, especially at this price range. I myself wouldn't buy it at any price, but that is me.

You look great, first things first. The fit is perfect, the long would have been too long. And in my opinion, that is not a tighter fit. :)

Here is why I think I am staying away from Maxi dresses, and seeing it styled with the tee reminded me...I wore a lot (I mean A LOT) of maxi dresses with white tees under them in the early 90s.

You know how some people cannot revisit certain eras because it reminds them to much of high school? Bam, that dress/tee combo is dinagideon, circa 1993. ;)

That said you can pull this off. So keep it as is, or...

Try the maxi dress with no under-tee, and use a short sleeved long cardigan with it and then either cinch it or keep it open. On your feet I see a pretty pair of sandals or open-toed flats.

Just my two cents!

Wow, I just went back and read everyone's comments. I feel like such a rebel! I cannot believe I am the only one who thought it was good on you! :) (So even though I don't want to wear maxi dresses myself, maybe the reminder of high school brought back fond memories and that in turn had me being all sentimental and then that made me love the dress on you.) Okay, so maybe you should disregard my opinion entirely.

^ lol ;)

I just think she has such a great figure, she could do better!

Im not in love with the print, but you do have a point- she COULD layer it differently. I prob would love it belted. However it almost looks like it flattens her chest, which generally isn't what one wants... and as for $98, the only thing (I) have in THAT kind of price range is my (awesome) winter coat. $98 could buy me a versatile wrap dress, and (I) never would spend that kind of money on a trend (maxi dress). However, everyone has their own budget, and perhaps $98 is nothing to our blogger here. :)

I am so glad you posted a review on this dress as it was on my wish list. I think you and I seem to be about the same size wise and I was afraid that the print would be too big and not flattering on me.
First-you are gorgeous! I love that you are a mom (I am as well), but still manage to take good care of yourself.
I have to agree w/most of the others...I think you could spend you $98 someplace else and get something more flattering.
Good luck!

I do love the colors of this dress - but there are 2 things that really distract me. (1) the shirt doesn't really work - the cap sleeves with the straps of the dress look kinda clunky to me. I would change it to a white tank if you want extra coverage, and I liked dina's idea of a cardi on top, assuming it's the right cut. (2) it really is too short fora maxi dress - you need a good 3" more of fabric. And this is why I have yet to find a maxi dress that I love - when you're tall, it's just a LOT of fabric. Given the price tag, I would vote to return.

Wow, first off you guys are awesome for giving me such quick, honest feedback without being mean and making me cry! I agree with everything you all said, it matches my gut feeling completely. I had SO wanted this dress to work out that I was hoping I was wrong but truthfully, I had repackaged it right after the post. So, it is going back and now I have NO doubt that it is the right decision!

And just to get it off my chest, it was a big splurge for me to spend that much on a maxi dress. All of my other Boden goodies were a Christmas gift from my parents so I felt I could pull the trigger on this one.

I may be one of the only ones but I LOVE this print. Something was a little "off" when I first saw it but I didnt think you looked bad. It just wasnt $98 worthy. I think youre making the right decision by returning it and spending the money on something(s) you absolutely love and feel great in!Just my two cents:)

I like the print, but I just don't think the cut and length are very flattering. If you don't feel great in it, it's definitely not worth $98! I say return it for something you *love*.

I first have to say how much I LOVE your blog .... I just found it the other day and you really inspire with your outfits! I also LOVE the modesty since I am the same way! So after your amazing J Crew post yesterday, I called my store this morning before they opened and put the last zipper cardiagn on hold!! SO THANK YOU!!! I also spent way too much money, but thank you so much for your reviews!! So the dress print looks amazing, but I would say you need the longer length .... and I am not sure about the hefty price tag. I would think you could find something close at Target or Old Navy.

For $98, I think you can find better. It is a bit short and I think you have such a great figure it's a shame not to flatter it. I truly believed you can find a better cut in a maxi dress.

I agree with most everyone, you are too cute to wear this dress. It does nothing for you. I honestly had this dress in my shopping cart, it would have been my first boden purchase.... lucky for me there are many other items in that cart I can buy. You are adorable, and I can't believe this dress didn't make you shine. It's the dress, not you.

Dina, I said the same thing you said about revisiting the past in my JCrew store today. My PS was trying to get me to buy the new cotton twill bomber style jacket. I mean seriously?? I'm not going back there again, and if I did, it would be leather, not cotton twill. So funny....

I'd say its an adorable dress and you should just exchange it for a longer size and it'd be perfect. No point keeping it if you're not sure, especially for $98!

i think it needs to be longer and it's not as flattering as it could be. I would try a different cut on top and a floor-length.

I'm assuming you sent this back already, but I'm going to chime in anyway. I saw your other Boden post and thought you looked great in all the other things you modeled. This just doesn't do it for you. And if there are other things there you might like equally well, you might as well try one of those rather than trying to make this work. I am new to Boden as well and am trying to be fairly severe with myself about returning things that don't look fabulous. (Of course, I keep ordering more, but at this point, I've kept 5 things and sent back 7, with a few more on the way.)

Late but still have an opinion: The down side of this dress is that it is fairly shapeless and just covers everything- like wearing a blanket. If you were trying to cover ...ahem..."figure flaws," that might be a good thing, but you are not. Unsure whether a belt would have helped because it would have warred with the empire top and I am not sure that a few inches longer would have made it better- possibly just made it tough to walk in/ up and down stairs without tripping on it. I think if you really want a long dress, you should find one with a waist and maybe a back or side or front slit which could be more flattering.

Boden have just sent a sneak peek email for their 2010 summer range. They have a maxi dress which is slighly different to the one you have ordered. I got this style last summer before it sold out and it is much more flattering than this seasons. One to consider and the colours are more sophisticated.
